Restoring Menstrual Dignity: Menstrual Hygiene Day at Lang'ata Women's Prison

Saturday, 30 May 2026 · 09:00 amLang'ata Women's Prison, Nairobi

About this Event

On 30 May 2026, the Kenya Youth Parliament of Water (KYPW) delivered its Menstrual Hygiene Day outreach at Lang'ata Women's Maximum Security Prison, Nairobi, under the theme Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld.

The half-day programme reached 40 incarcerated women with structured menstrual health education, hygiene product distribution, and dignified engagement. 13 KYPW team members and volunteers were present on the day, alongside partner organisations Binti, Quercus Group, Project Faraja/KGS, and the Sanitation Research Institute at MUST.

All six programme sessions were delivered as planned:

- Opening ceremony with National Anthem, welcome remarks, and keynote address

- Educational presentations on menstrual hygiene management (MHM), correct product use, and safe disposal

- Structured sessions on the health, social, and human dignity dimensions of menstrual health

- Formal donation: sanitary towels and hygiene supplies handed over to prison officials and distributed individually

- Closing ceremony with call to action

The event addressed compounded barriers facing incarcerated women: limited access to sanitary products, inadequate sanitation facilities, and pervasive stigma. This initiative is part of KYPW's ongoing WASH equity mandate - ensuring no Kenyan woman is left behind in access to menstrual health and dignified sanitation.

Media coverage by citizen.digital highlighted advocate calls for policy reform and institutional commitment alongside product donations.
